Why cannabis causes red eyes?

Red eyes are probably the first and most obvious evidence that someone is high.

But have you ever wondered why does that happen?

Some people may attribute red eyes to the smoke, but that’s definitely not the real reason behind red eyes.

Why do we get red eyes?

Cannabis causes a decrease in blood pressure. When someone consumes marijuana—eaten, vaporized or smoked—blood vessels tend to expand. The thing is: eye’s blood vessels are very visible due to the sclera (the white of the eye) so any change in blood pressure is more visible.

Cannabis is often used as a very effective treatment for glaucoma, a high-pressure related disease that damages the eye’s optic nerve and can result in vision loss and blindness. When the blood vessels expand, blood flow improves; therefore, pressure decreases.

Is it possible to avoid bloodshot?

The best thing to do after consuming cannabis is using eye drops for redness (not antialergic). Decongestant eye drops, or whitening eye drops, eliminate red eyes by shrinking the tiny blood vessels in the sclera, so your boss doesn’t find out.
