What is the Hash and how is smoked

What is the Hash?

Short for hashish, hash is the resin collected from the flowers of the cannabis plant. Similar to weed, the primary active substance is THC, but there are some key differences:

  • While marijuana usually applies to dried pieces of the plant (mainly flower buds), hash is a paste from resin – or the sap of the plant.
  • The THC level in weed is typically at a maximum level of 25 to 30%. On the other hand, hash is much stronger, often three times as potent — up to 60% or higher in THC.

The methods of producing hash versus marijuana are also very different. Although both processes involve harvesting the female cannabis plant and using the dry flowering tops/buds, hash includes collecting the trichomes (the hair-like resin glands) at the top of the buds. Then the flower and resin are separated and the resin is crushed into a powder by hand or with a machine. Finally, the sticky resin is molded into a ball or “brick” – which is then ready for use.

How is hash smoked?

Hash is usually smoked in pipes, water pipes, joints, and hookahs – and sometimes mixed with cannabis flowers or tobacco. Following is a quick primer on how to use hash:

  • Add it to a spliff with weed and tobacco. If you’re in possession of a dry block, you can simply crush it and add it when rolling a joint.
  • Place the chunk of hash in a pipe. Some people claim that when using a pipe or bong for smoking hash, much of the product will be wasted. On the other hand, pipes and bongs allow a user to avoid the toxins and other carcinogens present in smoke.
  • Dab it. Since hash belongs to a group of cannabis concentrates, it’s easy to use a glass rig and simply dab it, just like you dab the shatter or wax. This method is especially useful when using the full-melt hash.
  • Use a hot knife. Want to smoke hash like an old school hippie? Just grab two knives and heat them up on a stove. Once they reach the right temperature, add a little chunk of hash or hash oil to the blade and top it with the other knife. After that, inhale the smoke through a pen or straw.

Use a vaporizer. Today’s vaping pens are dedicated to consuming cannabis concentrates, so you can inhale the hash with your device and enjoy one of the healthy ways of having your brown paste.

Whichever method you choose with hash, it’s important to keep in mind:

  • PotencyDue to its high potency, make sure to start slow. Remember: you can always take more dabs, but you can’t take less!
  • Dosage.  Along the same lines, hash allows users to vaporize tiny amounts of extracted cannabinoids without having to inhale copious amounts (i.e. as one would if smoking a blunt). In other words, you don’t have to physically inhale as much to get the same, or better, results.

What are the side effects of smoking hash?

Although hash is much more potent than weed, it does have very similar side effects – only faster and more intense. The most common side effects include: a sense of wellbeing, relaxation, rapid flow of ideas, increased appreciation of music and food, heightened senses, sleepiness, pain relief, nausea relief and increased appetite.

Like weed, there may also be several negative side effects, including dry mouth, rapid heartbeat, impaired short term memory, anxiety and panic attacks.
